Buying & Owning a Dog
So you have decided to research buying a dog or you currently have a dog and want to learn more?
Welcome to the world of dogs. You are a member of one of the largest groups of people on Earth, those that own or love dogs. There is much you will need to learn, but it will be a fun journey and you will have a friend for life with your pet.
There are many different types and breeds of dogs as you know, and there are just as many different temperaments that dogs may have. Just like people, dogs will have a personality. Sometimes it is pleasant and sometimes it isn’t. It is best to learn all you can about dogs in general and your particular breed so that you can tackle any situation as well as know your dog inside and out. But you probably have already figured this out.
Perhaps you are starting from the beginning and buying a puppy. What steps should be taken when deciding on from whom and where to buy a new puppy, whether it is a gift for someone or for you alone?
The first step is to make sure that you or the person or family really wants a new puppy, and is totally prepared to assume the responsibilities. The second step, and equally important, is to make sure that you are getting the right breed of dog for the right person.
All breeds are not for all people. No two dogs are ever exactly alike, and temperament and behavior characteristics vary tremendously within the different breeds. Many a retired couple has wound up with a loud, whiny, hyperactive little terrier that would have been far better off in a home filled with active children. Situations like this can easily be avoided with a little advanced preparation and a little research.
Most buyers have a particular breed in mind before they set out to purchase their dog. But their preferences are frequently based on how “cute” that type of dog is, without much thought to what it will grow into if it is a puppy or what that breed required in the way of training, exercising and grooming. Regardless of what your breed preference is, it would be wise to have one or two alternates in mind so you can make comparisons between them. You may be searching for a pure bred dog or a mixture. Mixtures tend to have calmer personalities. You can get your dog from a breeder or from a shelter or friend. There will be a lot you will need to know and there are articles on this site to help you.
When it comes to the emotional universe of human to animal relationships, perfection becomes a much prized goal in the eyes of the dog owner. Everybody wants to have a dog that is in perfect health, perfect confirmation, and with the perfect temperament. This ideal canine does not really exist. You may find a dog that is close, but there will always be a hint of imperfection, just like there are in humans.
Also like humans, dogs may not only come with imperfections in health, they also come with complex emotional systems that may be experiencing some sort of malfunction at one time or another. Many owners concede that when a dog starts to display an unwanted characteristic, whether it is physical or mental, it is time to dispose of the dog for a replacement. Just keep in mind that you would not dispose of your best friend if they had these problems.
Your dog can be a fun life long companion, at least for his or her life, so it is a good idea to do your research for the answers you need and bring out the best that your dog can be. Enjoy your dogs like we do, and enjoy browsing the articles and products found here.
